FIGHTING BACK
A military field microphone converted into a musical tool.
Historically, countless inventions created for communication, science, engineering, and culture eventually found their way into military technology. Microphones were no exception. Research into transducers, communication systems, sensors, and speech intelligibility became deeply tied to military development throughout the 20th century. This microphone stands as a physical reminder of that history.
The title Fighting Back comes from the idea of reversing that direction. Instead of taking something created for music and using it for conflict, this is about taking a rugged military communication device and bringing it into the recording studio — REPURPOSING a tool built for the army into something creative, expressive, and human.
The microphone appears to be a Japanese OR United States - built military communication model, likely produced for U.S. military field systems, though German military use is also possible. Inside the capsule and housing are engraved patent references including “Brush Pat RE20213” and “See Patent Notice Inside,” linking the microphone to Brush development and military-era communication technology.
Heavy, compact in the hand, dark green hammered finish, beige internal mesh, thick-duty cable, and brutally solid metal housing . a minimalist industrial aesthetic that feels both functional and strangely beautiful. Every detail reflects reliability first — not decoration.
OPTICAL CONDITION
good vintage condition with authentic military wear and patina.
The dark green hammered finish remains
signs of age and use consistent with real field equipment.
TECHNICAL CONDITION
Fully refurbished and tested.
Converted professionally to standard XLR operation.
Original push-to-talk switching system has been bypassed for uninterrupted signal for recording use.
BUILD & DESIGN
The housing is exceptionally rugged and fully metal, built to withstand field operation and harsh environments. The shape resembles military radio or walkie-talkie communication microphones, with an integrated hand-operated trigger switch originally designed for push-to-talk communication systems. The switch can also mechanically lock into a silent mode position.
Its minimal industrial appearance is one of its strongest visual characteristics. The dark green hammered coating, beige internal mesh, and compact proportions create an unmistakably militant aesthetic that feels closer to military equipment than traditional audio gear.
Originally designed for military communication systems, this example has now been converted to balanced XLR connectivity for modern recording setups.
Capsule
Dynamic moving-coil capsule optimized primarily for speech intelligibility and communication clarity rather than full-range studio fidelity. The tuning strongly prioritizes vocal articulation, reliability, and focused midrange transmission under difficult conditions.
Circuit
Passive dynamic transformerless design with military communication-oriented switching architecture.
Originally integrated into push-to-talk field systems.

SOUND CHARACTERISTICS
This microphone sounds exactly like a military communication microphone should. The low end is heavily reduced, while the midrange remains extremely focused and intelligible. Speech cuts through immediately, even under noisy conditions, making spoken words easy to understand with remarkable consistency.
There is a certain aggressive narrow-band character to the sound that can become artistically very interesting in music production. Vocals, radio-style effects, industrial recordings, experimental electronic music, spoken word, or heavily layered texture work all suit this microphone naturally.
It does not try to sound hi-fi. It tries to deliver information clearly and reliably — and it does that exceptionally well.
