T-Bone Walker’s Legendary 1949 Gibson ES-5N Is Now Up for Auction on Reverb

Few instruments can claim to have shaped the course of modern music. T-Bone Walker’s 1949 Gibson ES-5N is one of them.

Widely regarded as one of the most historically significant electric guitars in existence, this ES-5N wasn’t just played by Walker—it helped define the sound and vocabulary of electric blues. Now, it’s available via a rare, closed-bid auction on Reverb, in partnership with London’s Regent Sounds.

T-Bone Walker stands among the true pioneers of the electric guitar. At a time when amplification was still a new frontier, his fluid phrasing, expressive bends, and showmanship pushed the instrument forward, laying the groundwork for generations of players to come.

His influence is hard to overstate. From Chuck Berry and B.B. King to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and beyond, countless artists built on techniques and ideas that Walker helped bring into the spotlight. And for nearly two decades, this Gibson ES-5N was at the center of it all.

Introduced in the late 1940s, the ES-5 was Gibson’s first three-pickup electric guitar—a forward-thinking design that expanded tonal possibilities at a time when the instrument itself was still evolving. Walker’s example, finished in blonde with gold hardware, is one of only a small number built in 1949, adding to its rarity and significance.

More importantly, it was a working instrument—used extensively throughout Walker’s career during a period that helped define the role of the electric guitar in popular music.

Like many instruments of this era, the guitar’s journey over the decades is complex.

It disappeared from public view in the late 1960s before resurfacing years later, and its story has since been documented in detail by historian Tony Bacon in Electric Blues! T-Bone Walker & The Guitar That Started It All.

While some aspects of its mid-century history are not fully documented in public records, the instrument has passed through multiple owners over the years and is now being offered for sale in collaboration with the Walker family.

As Regent Sounds' Patrick Racz explains:

"I’m pleased to confirm that we have been working with the Walker family to help protect, preserve, and enhance T-Bone Walker’s legacy and his deep connection to this historically important instrument. Bernita Walker, T-Bone’s daughter, kindly agreed to be interviewed by Tony Bacon for his recent book, Electric Blues! T-Bone Walker & The Guitar That Started It All. In honor of T-Bone Walker’s legacy, the current owners voluntarily committed to donating a generous portion of any revenues resulting from the sale or commercial use of this guitar to the Walker family."

That combination of historical importance, rarity, and documented provenance places this ES-5N in a category reserved for only a handful of instruments—those that exist not just as tools, but as artifacts of music history. Its availability marks a rare moment for collectors.
