I have to say that I was a little intimidated by all of the features and functions of the amp before it arrived. I tend to like things simple and was worried I might have to spend lots of time searching and tweaking to dial things in. Boy, was I wrong. I was able to get what is easily one of the best bass tones I’ve ever heard in literally seconds. The magic for me is in setting the gain structures of the two inputs and I ended up with the normal channel at 1 o’clock and the bright channel at 10 o’clock – with lots of amps you can switch between normal and bright, but being able to blend them is wonderful. Sounds great in my living room and I know it will sound even more incredible in the mix with my band. When we originally started talking, I was thinking of getting a lower powered amp and I am glad you convinced me to go with the Talos instead. With the master volume at around 9:30, the amp was as loud as I dared to be without making my neighbors mad – and this is with one 15 inch speaker (I usually use two with my band). So, I suspect it will give me the volume I need to gig with. I also am blown away by the fact you can get that much amplifier into a package that small and light. I am used to playing through SVTs and V4Bs – you know what those are like to move around at 2AM! A real engineering feat, my friend. today i played my Talos (Offset XL) over several cabs… wow… and with different basses double wow!!! never heard such differences between these several configurations… just awesome….

so far i preferred less knobs than on the Talos… BUT: the Talos has the most logical pre-amp i have ever experienced… the ergonomics and clarity is incredible…” Marc- Bremen, Germany.

“In 2015 I came in contact with Michalis Serpetsidakis after an email I got from him. We discussed about the valve amplifiers that he crafts, the Pure Tone Amps that are already known not only in Greece but in U.S., Canada, Germany, U.K. etc.
I had a forgotten knowledge about the valve amplifiers and it took me some time to reconsider my feel and my tone aesthetics. The result? I could not come back to the cheap solution of the amplifiers of our cheap digital age. I have nothing bad with the solid state world, in contrast it helped and still helps many musicians play, write music and be creative with lower cost means but with great compromises in the quality of tone and sound.
After this prologue I’d like to mention some technical characteristics of the amplifier I use. It’s the Pure Tone Amps prototype named “the Offset XL” (S/N 26) latter named “the Talos” as a model and with an output power of 100W.
Fist of all it is characterized by a unique design in the circuit as well as the ergonomics and its shape that is impressively small with the amazing thing to weight around 7 kg. For those that are familiar with valve amplifiers getting this output at this small size and weight this fact is an achievement.
The specific amplifier features 3X12AX7 valves (or ECC83 in European code) in the preamplifier and 4XEL34s in the power amp section. The whole craft is characterized by a unique and interesting style with the use of wood and aluminium.
The Equalizer is an analogue type, designed to offer many tones to choose and it does not reminds the classic bass mid treble that we are used to experience of course. A triple switch defines the mid frequency behavior of the amp acting like a parametric control. There are two separate gain controls that you can mix and get the exact amount of highs, punch and lows richness to taste, making it a flexible and versatile tool to match the tone at different live places.
Then there is the ENTASiS control (yes its as you see it written in latins but is a Greek word) that controls the master volume and there are three other switches that vary drastically the tone and giving the results:
1) Smoother or punchier – the Smooth/Raw switch that compresses the frequency range or makes it more wide tonally.
2) Warmer reducing the mids peak
3) Activating the Pure character of the amplifier that reminds the passive instruments with a tone control instead of the EQ but the ability to fine tune your tone via the dual gain controls, the tone shaping switches and ENTASiS.
The back side features a line out that now is updated with a level control and a ground lift. Finally there are twin outputs for speaker loads of 4-8-16 Ohm.
The Tone in my opinion is special, warm, with lot of harmonics, that we had forgot it existed. It also has the characteristic of the sweet overdrive the valves give and this can be altered drastically using different preamp and power amp valves like 6L6, KT77 etc
I encourage you to try it if you have the chance since it is quite a special experience.
