Jimmy Page — the legendary guitarist of Led Zeppelin — purchased his “Number Two” in 1973 after having spent quite some time trying to acquire an exceptional second Les Paul. This was several years after he had received his “Number One,” a ’59 Burst with a shaved-down neck profile and no serial number, from Joe Walsh. “Number Two” was essentially completely original when he acquired it. Jimmy immediately had some modifications made to the neck shape to bring it closer to the feel of his “Number One”; while the neck was slimmed down, the changes weren’t quite as extreme. Page played this Les Paul frequently during his time with Led Zeppelin before fitting it with Grover tuners and the legendary wiring that allows for both splitting the humbuckers and every conceivable combination of the four coils — which, of course, results in an immensely versatile tone. In 2009 the Gibson Custom Shop released a replica of this iconic guitar in a strictly limited edition; only 100 specimens of the aged version were produced and they have since all but disappeared from the market. If you’re lucky enough to find one that’s virtually pristine and comes with the full collector’s package (including the instruction template for the interesting Page wiring and the original box), it’s practically like discovering the Amber Room. We are therefore extremely pleased to offer you just such a specimen with serial number 086. Even the rich, beautiful Sunburst finish — in which the base color has faded to a dark amber brown — is utterly captivating. Add to that the phenomenal aging work by Tom Murphy himself, who meticulously recreated every play and wear mark from the original down to the smallest detail, and the modified electronics with a wide range of split and out-of-phase options, controlled via push/pull pots and two extra buttons under the pickguard. Although this guitar is, of course, the ultimate collector’s item, it really shouldn’t be viewed as just a display piece, since it’s simply too much fun to play. Once you’ve blasted through “Kashmir,” you won’t want to put the Page 2 down — especially since you can experiment endlessly with the sound using its switching system. The guitar is in mint, unplayed collector’s condition, complete with the original strings, original box and all factory-included accessories. ...and even the case, which is also in mint condition, could be called a “museum piece.”
