The 2002 Gibson Custom Shop Historic ’54 Les Paul Custom Reissue hails from an early era of the Gibson Custom Shop that is particularly highly regarded today. Even back then, the Historic models were built with significantly greater attention to detail than the regular U.S. production instruments. Features such as the long neck tenon, the ebony fingerboard, the nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and the meticulous craftsmanship made the Historic Collection Gibson’s top-of-the-line models as early as the beginning of the 2000s.

The guitar is equipped with the combination characteristic of the ’54 Historic: an Alnico Staple pickup at the neck and a P-90 Soapbar at the bridge. The specifications are rounded out by an ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge with a stop tailpiece, an ebony fingerboard with block inlays, multi-layer binding, and the classic “Black Beauty” look with gold-colored hardware.

The Historic models from these production years have earned an excellent reputation among collectors and players alike. They represent a distinct era of the Gibson Custom Shop—high-quality, meticulously handcrafted instruments that are highly prized today for their consistently high build quality and authentic character.

Despite being 26 years old, the guitar is in excellent condition with normal signs of wear and minor dings and scratches. There is only one deeper scratch under the pickguard, which is not visible when the pickguard is installed. It is, of course, free of repairs or breaks and comes in the original Gibson Art & Historic case, including the key and hangtags. Unfortunately, as is so often the case, the large orange Certificate of Authenticity has been lost.
