About this listing
Denmark regularly tops the list of the happiest places on Earth, partly due to their high number of effects manufacturers per capita. Carl Martin from Grenå's East Sound Research is one of the esteemed builders from this region, known for producing high-quality, no-nonsense effects. The Purple Moon, part of Carl Martin’s Vintage series, is a psychedelic toolkit that combines classic Uni-Vibe tones with blistering silicon fuzz in one sturdy housing. The control interface is intuitive and well-organized. On the vibe side, there are knobs for speed 1 and speed 2, with a footswitch to toggle between them and flashing LEDs to indicate their rates. The depth and level controls allow you to dial in the desired amount of swirl.Meanwhile, mini-pots set the fuzz amount and level. The jacks are top-mounted, minimizing pedalboard clutter, though removing the foam base plate can be a chore if you prefer using Velcro. The pedal runs via a 9V battery or AC adapter. To really put the Purple Moon to the test, I avoided the obvious and picked up a 1960 Les Paul Reissue and a Jazzmaster, plugging into my favorite new amp, the Dusky D20. Carl Martin has absolutely nailed the Uni-Vibe sound, delivering all the lush, swirling goodness you'd expect. Being able to approximate the classic Uni-Vibe’s two speeds, alternating between slow, swirly phasiness and a full-on rotating chop, is a fantastic feature. However, it's worth noting that the pedal doesn't have an expression pedal input or a ramp-speed control. These features could have enhanced the versatility since the ramp-speed effect—a gradual speed increase—is one of the best features of vibe effects of this type. The fuzz effect is phenomenal. It’s crisp, with an ungodly amount of sizzle. While the vibe can be used without fuzz, the inverse isn’t true; there’s no fuzz-only option. This limits the pedal's versatility somewhat, but viewing the Purple Moon as a Uni-Vibe pedal that adds a high-quality bonus fuzz might help justify it, especially considering you get both effects for about the same price as many vibe-only pedals. In summary, the Purple Moon offers a lot of vibe control, and when the fuzz is engaged, its psychedelic tone is impressive.
