It's easy to understand the hype when you plug the Hot Tubes in, it gives your tone that crunchy, natural breakup that only vintage combos can normally achieve. With the tone stock bypassed, the pedal brings out a darker, fuzzier texture perfect for garage-y applications where a touch more gain is preferred. Engaging the tone stack cuts the low-end response slightly, adds brightness and generally tightens the sound.
