A very early production example of the BOSS PQ-3B Bass Parametric Equalizer, made in Taiwan in May 1991.

The PQ-3B is generally considered to have entered production around March 1991, making this May 1991 unit one of the earlier examples from the pedal’s initial Taiwan production period. For collectors of vintage BOSS pedals, that early production date gives this particular unit a little extra appeal beyond simply being a discontinued model.

The PQ-3B is also a genuinely useful pedal rather than just a collectible piece. Its three fully parametric EQ bands allow much more precise tone shaping than a conventional graphic equalizer.

The LOW section covers 25Hz–400Hz, the MIDDLE section 160Hz–2.5kHz, and the HIGH section 1kHz–16kHz, with up to ±18dB of boost or cut on each band. A separate LEVEL control also lets you compensate for volume changes or use the pedal as a clean boost.

What makes the PQ-3B so effective is the ability to search for the exact frequency that needs attention. You can tighten excessive low-end boom, bring out definition and attack, add weight to a thinner bass sound, or shape the midrange so the instrument sits more naturally in a mix.

It is particularly useful for bass, but it can also be a powerful tone-shaping tool for guitar, keyboards, and other instruments.

Early discontinued BOSS pedals have their own charm, and this May 1991 example sits right near the beginning of the PQ-3B’s production history. A nice piece for a BOSS collector, but still very much a pedal that earns its place on a working pedalboard.
