This Made in Japan Boss PH-1 Phaser features an exceptionally low serial number: 9400 — placing it right at the very beginning of PH-1 production around 1979/1980. Ultra-early black label compact Boss pedals like this rarely surface anymore, especially in honest original condition.

Produced during the very first golden era of Boss compact pedals, the PH-1 became famous for its rich analogue sweep, musical warmth and beautifully organic modulation character. Compared to many later phasers, the original PH-1 sounds wonderfully smooth and dimensional, capable of everything from subtle movement and shimmering textures to dramatic vintage swirl.

There is a reason players and collectors continue chasing these early Japanese examples.

Unlike the later PH-1r version, the original PH-1 has a softer, more natural sweep character that sits beautifully with clean tones, edge-of-breakup amplifiers and vintage-style gain sounds. Think less sterile “effect” and more moving, breathing analogue texture.
