A recreation of an icon

As a tribute to the legendary 1959 Les Paul model, the Gibson Custom Shop, in collaboration with the ageing specialists at Murphy Lab, offers an extremely successful recreation of the original. From the careful selection of wood and hand-wired electronics to the quality of the finish and hardware, the Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard Green Lemon Fade Heavy Aged truly offers everything that defines a classic '59 Les Paul.

Maple top and mahogany neck with long headstock

The foundation of the Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard lies in its basic construction from selected tonewoods, as were already used in the late 1950s. Accordingly, the body consists of a solid piece of mahogany and is finished with a two-piece maple top featuring a stylish flame pattern. Naturally, no recipe for a good Fifties Les Paul would be complete without the long neck tenon of the mahogany neck, which is glued down to just below the neck pickup.

Gibson Custom Bucker with Paper-in-Oil Caps

To achieve the authentic sound of the legendary PAF humbucker, Gibson has created two Custom Bucker humbuckers that are successful replicas of the coveted double-coil pickups. Hand-wound in the Gibson Custom Shop, these pickups feature Alnico III magnets for a warm and vocal tone character and have unwaxed coils, ensuring that the high-frequency content of the signal is clearly preserved. The electronics wiring is also entirely hand-wired and, with CTS potentiometers for Volume and Tone and oil-paper capacitors, features original components from the golden LP era.

Murphy Lab Heavy Aged Treatment

Murphy Lab, founded by legend Tom Murphy, consists of a team of experts who analyse in detail the finish and ageing process of the hardware on original instruments and authentically recreate them as part of the 1959 Les Paul Standard Heavy Aged Green Lemon Fade. The Heavy Aged Treatment represents a more intense ageing process and simulates the accumulated signs of wear in the form of visible playing marks on an instrument that has been played frequently over the years. The composition of the nitrocellulose lacquer has also been taken into account, so that the instrument can develop additional ageing characteristics over time.
