If any all-tube amplifier in the luxury segment truly deserves the title of "jack-of-all-trades" without reservation, it's undoubtedly the 'Ampete One' from Ampete Engineering. Peter Arends and his team build amps, speakers, and switching systems in the heart of Germany that are hard to beat in terms of quality and flexibility. Clad in high-quality green and white Tolex, its very appearance immediately piques curiosity about its inner workings. Designed as a two-channel amplifier, the "One" boasts amp power reserves with 100 watts of nominal output, while the extremely effective master volume control provides stepless adjustment of the luxurious sound from just above zero to one hundred. This is reminiscent of the top-of-the-line amps from Friedman... The two channels have a distinctly American or British character, feature independent tone controls, and can be boosted via footswitch in the treble range or with full-range gain. In addition to the serial or parallel effects loop, the switch on the back of the control unit is particularly interesting, allowing for three-stage adjustment of the bass response. Also located on the back are the 'Presence' and 'Deep' controls, which affect the power amp section powered by four EL-34 tubes. Naturally, the amp is MIDI-compatible and programmable, has a line out, and so on and so forth. I believe that if you're willing to delve into the Ampete's complex capabilities, you can recreate almost any sound of today's sought-after tube amps, from ultra-clean to crunch to absolute high-gain mayhem. And if you do, you'll be rewarded with a fantastic sound and almost limitless flexibility. The FX Loop also offers a feature that we haven't seen from any other manufacturer so far. The FX Loop has a so-called spillover, allowing delays or reverbs to decay naturally when the FX Loop is deactivated.
