This 'Hogtop' Gibson J45 from 1946 is an absolute dream guitar for the lover of vintage instruments. With its Script logo on the headstock, mahogany top and warm tone, this is a special piece of American guitar history with the timeless "dry" sound that early J45s are known for.

The 1946 J45 marks a pivotal moment in Gibson history. It was the year that the iconic “Only a Gibson is Good Enough” banner disappeared from the headstock, leaving only the elegant script logo. This transitional period just after World War II represents a fascinating chapter in the development of what would later become known as “the workhorse” acoustic guitar.

The guitar produces that unmistakable, dry, woody tone that only a well-played vintage J45 can deliver. The bass is rich and full, yet defined, while the highs are clear but never harsh. The scalloped bracing provides a beautiful responsiveness, and the guitar responds instantly to every nuance of your touch. Whether you’re playing a heavy bluegrass session or subtle fingerstyle, this J45 comes to life and tells its musical story through every note.

What makes this J45 extra special is the mahogany top with the rosette that is reminiscent of the inner ring of the rosette that we find on a Southern Jumbo. This striking deviation makes this specimen all the more rare and intriguing for the collector. The mahogany body and top with scalloped X-bracing together form the foundation for the characteristic warm, full sound that has given the J45 its legendary status.

The thick C-shaped neck profile is typical for this period and offers a solid hold while playing. With a thickness of 24.5 mm at the first fret, this neck gives an authentic vintage playing feel that cannot be compared with modern replicas. The rosewood fingerboard with simple pearl dot inlays underlines the no-nonsense appearance of this workhorse, while the original Three-On-A-Plate tuners complete the vintage character.

This J45 from 1946 has of course had some maintenance. For example, cracks on the back and side of the body have been repaired; the two on the side have been glued, while the crack on the back has been stabilized with glued-in cleats. The guitar has also been refretted, making it playable!

Comes with a hardshell case and TFOA passport.
