The DigiTech DSB Screamin’ Blues is one of those pedals that quietly earned a loyal following while everybody else was arguing over Tube Screamers and boutique overdrives. Released in 2004 as part of DigiTech’s standard D-Series stompbox lineup, the Screamin’ Blues was DigiTech’s answer to the whole “transparent blues overdrive” craze that exploded in the early 2000s. And honestly, they nailed it better than a lot of people realize.
Controls:
- Level: Controls the overall output volume of the pedal. At lower Gain settings, the Level control can easily push the front end of a tube amp harder for a more natural amp-like breakup. The pedal has plenty of output on tap, so it also works very well as a clean-ish boost in front of other drives and distortions.
- Low: Active bass EQ control. This knob is a huge part of why the Screamin’ Blues feels bigger and fuller than a lot of blues-style overdrives. Turning it up adds thickness and body, especially helpful with single-coil pickups or smaller combo amps. Backing it down tightens the low end and keeps things more focused for brighter amps or humbuckers.
- High: Active treble EQ control. This is not one of those subtle “tone” knobs where nothing happens until the last 10 percent of rotation. The High control has a strong effect on the pedal’s voice. Turn it up and the pedal gets brighter, sharper, and more cutting. Roll it back and the Screamin’ Blues smooths out nicely for warmer vintage-style tones. A little movement here goes a long way.
- Gain: Controls the amount of overdrive and distortion. At lower settings, the pedal delivers a clean-ish edge-of-breakup sound with lots of touch sensitivity and pick dynamics. Around noon, it moves into classic blues-rock territory with rich sustain and crunchy rhythm tones. Push it higher and the Screamin’ Blues becomes far more aggressive than many people expect, entering thick classic rock and saturated lead territory while still maintaining good note definition.
