The Roland MC-202 MicroComposer, released in 1983, is a monophonic analog synthesizer and two-track step sequencer. Often described as a "groovebox" ahead of its time, it combines the sound engine of the Roland SH-101 with a sequencing architecture similar to the Roland MC-4. SPECS: The MC-202's synthesizer section is nearly identical to the Roland SH-101, making it a staple for punchy basslines and "acid" sounds. VCO: A single voltage-controlled oscillator producing simultaneous sawtooth, square/pulse (with PWM), and sub-octave square waveforms. Filter: Features a classic Roland 24dB/octave low-pass resonant filter. LFO & Envelope: Includes a single sine/triangle LFO with a delay feature and a standard ADSR envelope generator. Missing Features: Unlike the SH-101, it lacks a noise generator and multiple LFO shapes. Two-Track Sequencer: It can store two independent sequences; one typically controls the internal synth while the second can drive external gear via CV/Gate.
