Nicknamed the "Voice of Rock", and a member of Deep Purple, Trapeze and numerous other legendary projects, Hughes has always developed an exceptionally personal approach to the bass: powerful, expressive and incredibly groovy, capable of filling an entire mix while never losing the sense of movement and musicality that defines truly great bass playing. His partnership with Orange, the British brand that has itself become a genuine rock institution, therefore feels like a particularly natural match.The Glenn Hughes Signature O Bass is the result of this meeting of two worlds. At first glance, it retains the vintage and deliberately stripped-down spirit of the O Bass, with its instantly recognizable offset body shape and its philosophy of focusing on efficiency rather than complexity. But a closer look quickly reveals that this version was designed as a genuine Signature instrument.This is definitely not simply a standard O Bass repainted in purple. Orange developed this version with electronics and aesthetics specifically associated with Glenn Hughes. The most important difference can be found in the pickup: while the standard Orange and Black O Bass models use an Orange custom-wound split-coil, the Glenn Hughes Signature features a Seymour Duncan SPB-1. It is a particularly inspired choice, delivering a stronger, more precise and above all highly expressive response.The positioning of this Seymour Duncan is also far from incidental. Orange placed it closer to the bridge than on a traditional Precision Bass. This modification gives the bass an immediately distinctive sonic character: the low end becomes tighter and more defined, while the midrange becomes more prominent, firmer and more aggressive. The result is plenty of punch and an excellent ability to cut through a mix, without sacrificing the depth and organic character expected from a great passive bass.This is precisely where the O Bass becomes particularly interesting. It encourages you to dig in, let the notes breathe, work with dynamics and, above all, focus on rhythmic placement rather than simply piling up low frequencies. It is a bass with genuine character, one that encourages the player to develop their own voice.The craftsmanship retains the intelligent simplicity that makes the O Bass so appealing. The comfortable neck, traditional construction and 34" scale length provide familiar playing sensations, while the Purpleheart fingerboard and satin-finished neck contribute to an exceptionally pleasant playing experience. Its relatively moderate weight and overall balance also make it an easy instrument to live with, whether on stage or in the rehearsal room.Visually, the Glenn Hughes Signature is naturally full of personality. The beautiful Deep Purple finish pays tribute to the bassist's history while giving the instrument a very distinctive presence. But the detail that really sets it apart is undoubtedly the black and white checkerboard binding, featured not only around the body but also on the headstock.
