The compact instrument with the same dimensions as its predecessor offers 16 tracks, which can be assigned either as audio or MIDI tracks. These tracks are loaded with machines and ultimately stored in the drum kit. The audio machines, of which there are five different ones, are specialized in different playback variants for individual samples and even Loops and can be edited extensively. Whether you equip a drum kit only with oneshots, loops, warped samples or MIDI tracks is up to the user. Anyone familiar with the first Digitakt will recognize many familiar features, but Version II shines with numerous innovations and an enormous musicality with plenty of room for experimentation. The famous Elektron sequencer, including Parameterlocks and lots of programmable dynamics, makes a significant contribution to this. Another highlight is the significantly larger memory of the 2nd generation: the sample RAM is now a whopping 400 MB instead of 64 MB and the internal +Drive memory has been increased from 1 GB to 20 GB.Simply playing was yesterdayWith the Digitakt II, Elektron has reached deep into its bag of tricks and has included five audio machines. While its predecessor only had Oneshot, it now also has Werp, Stretch, Repitch and Grid. This finally makes it possible, among other things, to automatically set Loops to the desired tempo via time stretching or to cut up Loops and rearrange it in the grid. The filter section now offers interchangeable filter machines. You can choose between Multimode, Lowpass 4, Equalizer, Comb and Legacy LP/HP. This alone significantly enhances the sound palette! The track effects bandwidth filter, overdrive, bit reduction and sample Rate reduction are also available for each audio track. A lot has also been done in terms of modulation: no less than three very flexible and, above all, freely assignable LFOs per track provide plenty of variety in the sound. All tracks are given the finishing touches with the excellent sounding Saturator Delay, Supervoid Reverb and Panoramic Chorus insert effects. The master effects Overdrive and Stereo compressor are available to get the maximum out of the audio tracks. All effects can be edited extensively and range from subtle to club-suitable to cinematic. This is where it becomes clear that the Digitakt II is so much more than just a drum machine with a sampler. Thanks to the new audio machines and filter machines, there are so many possibilities that were previously unthinkable in the box. On top of that, the compact device is the perfect sequencing center for smaller and larger setups.Live sequencer! The Digitakt II's sequencer is absolutely suitable for live use, quick to program and, above all, easy to learn. Real-time and rock-solid timing are the magic words for Elektron's recipe for success. A total of 128 patterns can be saved. Each pattern can have a maximum length of up to 128 steps (8 bars), and each track can also be given its own step length and scaling. Naturally, the Digitakt II also features parameter locks, allowing individual parameters to be locked to one or more steps without permanently affecting the sound. Other features such as a Euclidean pattern generator, shuffle, micro timing or programmable trigger probability effectively round off the intervention options. Each of the 16 internal tracks can be configured as a MIDI track for external MIDI equipment such as a desktop synth. The tracks are four-voice polyphonic playable respectively programmable, allow the addressing of 16 CC parameters and two LFOs can be freely assigned. The keyboard mode with 36 scales is a great help if no MIDI keyboard is connected for note input.
