The RE-301, released in 1977, features a new chorus circuit in addition to the spring reverb of the classic tape echo model RE-201. Roland was a pioneer in the development of chorus effects, as seen in its pedal-type effect pedals and the "Jazz Chorus," and released its first BOSS-brand chorus pedal, the CE-1, in 1976. The chorus in the RE-301 is also strongly inherited from that pedal. The CE-1 has also found use in the world of sound design, as it allows for a sound-on-sound style without the use of an elimination head. Space Echoes are popular because of their highly musical sound, with repeated delays blending into the background. The following maintenance has been performed and the unit is in good working order.
