For several decades, the Japanese brand has developed genuine expertise in this field, combining the traditional characteristics of hollow body guitars with a much more modern approach to design, ergonomics and playability. And when a musician such as Pat Metheny is involved in the development of an instrument, the result is bound to be particularly interesting.Pat Metheny's relationship with Ibanez dates back to the late 1970s. Since then, their collaborations have produced some of the brand's most iconic jazz guitars. Pat Metheny has always sought to push beyond the boundaries of traditional jazz, combining harmonic richness, warm tones, rhythmic precision and a highly personal approach to the instrument. The PM3C fits perfectly into this philosophy.The PM3C is a superb single-cutaway hollow body that manages to offer a genuine professional jazz guitar while remaining remarkably accessible. Its construction combines a spruce top with maple back and sides, a 3-piece Nyatoh/Maple set neck and a beautiful ebony fingerboard. The overall impression is one of precision and outstanding attention to detail, particularly with the Medium frets featuring Ibanez's Artstar fret-edge treatment, which provides an exceptionally smooth playing feel.The design is all the more interesting because Ibanez has not simply reproduced a classic jazz guitar architecture. The relatively slim body for a hollow body of this size provides excellent acoustic presence while remaining extremely comfortable to play. The 628 mm scale length and 305 mm radius also contribute to its effortless feel, while the Gibraltar Performer bridge and VT200 tailpiece provide excellent stability.But it is undoubtedly the PM Special pickup that gives this guitar much of its personality. This single-coil pickup was specifically developed around Pat Metheny's preferences and clearly draws inspiration from the tonal character of the great early electric jazz instruments. It delivers a remarkably rich, warm and articulate sound, while retaining an impressive amount of definition in chords and melodic lines. Ibanez has created a genuine traditional jazz voice here, but with the response and precision perfectly suited to the demands of a modern musician.The PM3C is particularly appealing to anyone looking for a true jazz guitar without necessarily having to invest in considerably more expensive instruments. This is precisely where Ibanez excels: the brand now has tremendous experience with hollow body guitars and offers instruments whose build quality, playability and overall design are extremely difficult to match within their price range.
