We are pleased to present an extraordinarily rare piece of guitar history at The Fellowship of Acoustics: a 1928 National Tricone Style 1 Round Neck. This example is one of the first generation of round neck Nationals ever produced, making it a truly historic instrument.

The Tricone was National's very first guitar model, introduced in late 1927 as a Hawaiian lap steel. It was the result of a collaboration between designer John Dopyera and guitarist George Beauchamp, who wanted an instrument that was louder than the existing wooden guitars. Early in 1928, the first Spanish round-neck versions appeared, including this beautiful example. This guitar therefore represents a crucial moment in the development of the resonator guitar.

The characteristic German Silver (also called nickel-silver) of the body and cone not only gives this Tricone its distinctive look, but also contributes to its unique sound. The three-cone system produces a rich, complex sound with unparalleled sustain - exactly what these guitars have become so famous for.

The mahogany V-shaped neck with its flat ebony fingerboard is typical of this early period. With a scale length of 635 mm (25") and a relatively wide nut of 47 mm, this guitar offers an authentic vintage playing experience. The original Three-on-a-Plate tuners and T-bridge complete the historical ensemble.

For an instrument that is 97 years old, this Tricone is in excellent condition. The guitar has of course collected playwear and patina, and the back of the body is dented. There is also an engraved name and date on the front; Paul E Lowrey, July 31 1928. This National Tricone is a rare opportunity to own a piece of American guitar history that not only has historical value, but is also simply an impressive musical instrument!

The guitar comes with a TFOA passport in a hardshell case.
