The AKG D 99 C, commonly known as “Harry”, is one of AKG’s most distinctive microphone designs. AKG introduced the production version in 1974 and produced it in limited numbers during the mid-1970s.

Harry uses 2 omnidirectional dynamic microphone capsules positioned inside the artificial head. The shape of the head and ears captures the timing and level differences that occur naturally between human ears, producing a convincing binaural stereo image when recordings are played through headphones.

It is suitable for ambient binaural recording, experimental recording, sound effects, field recording and characterful ASMR applications. Its vintage dynamic capsules provide a distinctive period character rather than the highly detailed sound of a modern condenser-based dummy head.

Condition and servicing

The microphone has been carefully inspected, tested and serviced. The internal wiring was checked and the attached cable was fitted with 2 new Neutrik 3-pin XLR connectors, making Harry easy to connect to modern microphone preamps, recorders and audio interfaces.

The original DIN connectors have been replaced by the new XLR connectors.

Both channels are working correctly and have been checked for closely matched output. As this is a passive dynamic microphone, it does not require phantom power.

The flocked exterior is exceptionally well preserved for its age. Please inspect all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.

The original box is structurally complete but shows normal age-related storage wear. The original documentation also shows normal signs of age and handling.

Please note that the D 99 C is a relatively low-output dynamic microphone. A microphone preamp or recorder with sufficient clean gain is recommended, particularly when recording quiet sources.
