Gibson ES-335 Dot 1991 - 2014

First known as the ES-335 Dot, then renamed the ES-335 Reissue in the '90s, this instrument is based on the technical specs of its 1960s predecessor. While specimens from the early '80s may command a higher asking price, all ES-335 Reissues are built from a semi-hollow maple body with a rosewood fingerboard, two humbuckers, and come with the identifying dot inlays. While Fender Japan is popularly known for some of their more extravagant aesthetics, the bulk of domestic Japanese production was focused on reissues of historic American Fender models. These reissue models were labeled by a two letter/two number model code for the model and reissue year, followed by a suffix that indicated the price in Yen, and any unique specifications the model had. While a given model might come in a variety of price points during a given model year, from entry level to the near Custom Shop quality of Fender Japan's ExTrad series, all the models would broadly follow the aesthetic and technical specifications of the original American models. Reissue models would follow this naming convention until 2015, when Fender Japan revamped their product line to more closely mirror the organizational structure of the Mexican and American made Fender lines. Models on this page represent the 1982 - 2015 era of Fender Japan production, and typically feature the old style Fender Japan serial number at the base of the neck, as opposed to the contemporary "JD-" serial number format found on the back of the headstock. The original model codes (and frequently the value suffix) can usually be found in the neck pocket of the body, and at the base of the neck where the mounting holes are. - 82

Fender Modern Player Starcaster
5 available from $900Gibson dominated the semi-hollow guitar market from the 1950s onward, spurring Fender to try and gain market share in that segment in the 1970s. To do that, they developed the Fender Starcaster, a short-lived offset semi-hollow guitar with dual humbuckers. A loyal fan base grew for decades after production ended, leading to several boutique builds based on the template (i.e. the Bilt Volare, Paul Langudoec's custom build for Trey Anastasio). Finally, Fender hear the calling in 2012 and reissued the guitar as the Modern Player Starcaster. The model is built in China to keep costs and pricing affordable, but offers the same essential design elements as the original. - 94
