1981 Rickenbacker 4001 Left-Handed Jetglo – Rare Vintage USA Bass – UI3292A rare opportunity to acquire a genuine factory left-handed 1981 Rickenbacker 4001 in iconic Jetglo, serial UI3292, with remarkable long-term Seattle ownership history and its vintage fitted hard case. This is the real thing: a genuine USA-made vintage Rickenbacker 4001 produced in September 1981, in the considerably less common factory left-handed configuration. The instrument's serial number and identity have been confirmed directly with Rickenbacker Customer Service, and that correspondence has been retained and can be provided to a serious purchaser. This is not a modern reissue or reproduction. It is an authentic early-1980s Rickenbacker 4001 with approximately 45 years of genuine age, character and history.KEY DETAILSManufacturer: RickenbackerModel: 4001 Left-HandedYear: 1981Production: September 1981Finish: JetgloSerial Number: UI3292Manufactured: USAOrientation: Factory Left-HandedStrings: 4Construction: Neck-ThroughFingerboard: RosewoodInlays: Classic triangular Rickenbacker inlaysOutputs: Standard and Rick-O-SoundNeck Pickup: Bartolini replacementCase: Vintage fitted hard case as photographedA GENUINE FACTORY LEFT-HANDED 4001For the serious Rickenbacker enthusiast, the defining feature of this instrument is that it is a genuine factory-produced left-handed 4001, rather than a later conversion. It retains the unmistakable features that made the vintage 4001 one of the world's most recognisable bass designs: the Jetglo finish, neck-through construction, bound body and neck, triangular fingerboard inlays, distinctive headstock and dual STANDARD / RICK-O-SOUND outputs. The physical serial number UI3292 is clearly stamped into the jack plate and is extensively photographed in this listing.Rickenbacker Customer Service has separately confirmed the instrument's identity as a genuine left-handed Model 4001 from September 1981.For a collector or player specifically seeking a vintage left-handed Rickenbacker, this is an uncommon opportunity.OWNED SINCE PURCHASE IN SEATTLE IN 1991I personally purchased this bass in Seattle, Washington in 1991, and it has remained with me since that purchase. It was acquired from a downtown Seattle pawn shop during one of the most historically important periods in Seattle's music history. That 1991 acquisition gives this instrument a particularly interesting history extending back more than three decades.THE SEATTLE / KURT COBAIN STORYThere is also an unusual story associated with the bass which I believe should be recorded accurately and transparently. When I purchased the bass from the Seattle pawn shop in 1991, the pawn broker told me directly that Kurt Cobain had pawned this particular bass approximately two weeks earlier for US$200.I subsequently purchased it from the pawn shop for US$450.That statement was made directly to me by the pawn broker at the time of the transaction in Seattle in 1991. It is not a story added to the instrument decades later by a subsequent owner. However, I want to be completely clear about what has and has not been established.IMPORTANT PROVENANCE DISCLOSUREI am NOT representing or selling this instrument as an authenticated Kurt Cobain-owned bass.At present I do not have a surviving pawn ticket, photograph of Cobain with this instrument, or independently verified documentary chain of custody proving that association.Accordingly, no authenticated Kurt Cobain provenance is being claimed and no guarantee of previous Cobain ownership is being made. The account is included because it was told to me directly by the Seattle pawn broker when I personally purchased this bass in 1991 and therefore forms part of the instrument's known acquisition history.A purchaser interested in researching that history further would have a very distinctive instrument, serial UI3292, and a specific Seattle acquisition period from which to continue that research.BARTOLINI MODIFICATION – FULLY DISCLOSEDThis bass is not being represented as a completely untouched factory-original collector example. The original neck pickup is no longer installed and has been replaced with a Bartolini pickup. The installation involved routing/modification beneath the pickguard. That modification is fully disclosed and should be taken into account when assessing the instrument's originality and value.I would much rather present the bass accurately than attempt to disguise a modification on a vintage instrument of this significance. No claim is being made that every electronic or hardware component has been independently verified as factory original. Buyers should rely upon the detailed photographs and the specific disclosures in this listing.HONEST VINTAGE CONDITIONThis bass has genuine age and genuine wear. The Jetglo finish shows scratches, marks and other signs of decades of use and storage. There is visible oxidation, tarnishing and corrosion to areas of the chrome hardware, bridge components, jack plate, screws and other metal components. These characteristics are clearly shown in the photographs. It has not been aggressively polished, refinished or cosmetically restored for sale. I have deliberately left the instrument's vintage appearance intact rather than attempting to make a circa-1981 bass appear artificially new. Please study the high-resolution photographs carefully. They have been deliberately selected to show not only the attractive areas of the instrument but also its wear, oxidation and imperfections. The photographs form an important part of the condition description.VINTAGE FITTED HARD CASE INCLUDEDThe bass is supplied with the vintage fitted hard case shown in the photographs. The case has substantial character of its own, including numerous music-related stickers accumulated over its life. The case and stickers have intentionally been left as they are.The case is included as photographed; I am not representing it as the original factory Rickenbacker case unless that is independently established.WHY THIS EXAMPLE STANDS OUTWhat makes this instrument particularly compelling is the combination of characteristics that come together in one bass:Genuine Rickenbacker 4001Factory left-handed configurationSeptember 1981 productionClassic Jetglo finishUSA manufacturePhysical serial UI3292Identity confirmed with Rickenbacker Customer ServiceClassic neck-through 4001 constructionStandard and Rick-O-Sound outputsVintage fitted hard casePersonally purchased in Seattle in 1991More than three decades of known ownership historyExtraordinary but explicitly unverified Seattle pawn-shop provenanceThe Bartolini modification and routing prevent this from being represented as an untouched original example, and that has been disclosed clearly. At the same time, they do not change what the instrument fundamentally is: a genuine, factory left-handed, USA-made 1981 Rickenbacker 4001 in Jetglo. For a left-handed player, vintage Rickenbacker enthusiast, collector or someone with a particular interest in instruments connected to the Seattle music scene of the early 1990s, this is an exceptionally interesting bass.SALEThe instrument is offered in Good vintage condition and exactly as extensively photographed.Vintage fitted hard case included.Additional detailed photographs or reasonable questions are welcome through Reverb before purchase.Serious enquiries and reasonable offers are welcome. The bass will be carefully packed for shipment, with the instrument protected inside its case and the case appropriately protected for transport.PLEASE NOTEThis instrument is sold As-Described.Please review the complete description and all photographs carefully before purchasing. The photographs form part of the condition disclosure. The Bartolini pickup modification, routing, cosmetic wear, oxidation and corrosion have been specifically disclosed. The Seattle/Kurt Cobain account is included strictly as the contemporaneous statement made to me by the pawn broker when I purchased the instrument in Seattle in 1991. It is not represented as independently authenticated celebrity provenance.A rare factory-left-handed vintage Rickenbacker 4001 with genuine 1981 manufacture, classic Jetglo presentation, more than three decades of ownership history and a remarkable Seattle story.
