For 2024's All Born Screaming, St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) took the full reins of her production for the first time, to astounding—and recently Grammy-winning—results.
The rich combinations of drum machines and dubby effects, floating textures, synths, and guitars that never quite sound like guitars... we had to know how she did it, and, of course, what gear she used.
Over the course of an afternoon, we watched as she built an unreleased track and got an in-depth tour of her small but expertly arranged studio, which includes a mix of versatile, affordable machines like the Roland TR-8S, her St. Vincent Signature Ernie Ball Music Man, and lots of vintage gems she found on Reverb.
