SENNHEISER MD 21 — EARLY VERSION

The Sennheiser MD 21 is one of the defining microphones of early German broadcasting. Introduced in the 1950s, the omnidirectional dynamic microphone was designed specifically for the demanding world of radio, television, journalism and field reporting.

Its success came from a remarkably straightforward concept: excellent speech reproduction, an omnidirectional pickup pattern that made positioning easy, and an exceptionally robust metal construction capable of surviving constant professional use.

This particular microphone is an early MD 21 example, recognizable by its characteristic flat grille construction and distinctly dark grey body with a subtle green-blue tone.

VINTAGE .
The microphone is in a good condition considering its age.

The distinctive dark grey-green/blue body finish remains largely intact, with small scratches, marks and areas of coating wear from normal use.

The early flat metal grille is very well preserved, without significant dents or deformation. the mesh and body have a seem of 1.6mm

Black Sennheiser badge at the centre of the grille.  probably added later during the microphone's life rather than being part of the original factory configuration.

BUILD & DESIGN

The MD 21 is a particularly beautiful example of function-driven German industrial design.

Its unusual rectangular body was not simply a stylistic decision. The microphone was conceived as a professional handheld broadcasting instrument, where durability, secure handling and consistent performance were considerably more important than elegance or low weight.

The substantial metal housing protects the internal dynamic system, while the broad grille provides acoustic access to the omnidirectional capsule while remaining remarkably resistant to physical damage.

The result is a microphone that feels almost overbuilt by modern standards.

This early example is especially interesting because its appearance differs noticeably from the later MD 21 most people recognize today. The flat grille, darker grey-green/blue finish and early housing construction give it a distinctly different character from subsequent versions.

The MD 21 remained in production through numerous generations, and these physical differences provide a fascinating record of how Sennheiser gradually developed one of its longest-lived professional microphone designs.

SOUND QUALITY

The MD 21 is an omnidirectional dynamic microphone with a sound designed around clarity, consistency and natural reproduction.

Its character is direct, balanced and articulate, particularly on speech and voice.

One of its most useful characteristics comes directly from its omnidirectional design: the MD 21 exhibits very little proximity effect. It can therefore be brought close to a speaker without producing the exaggerated bass increase typical of many directional microphones.

This was particularly valuable in broadcasting. During an interview, the microphone could move constantly between reporter and subject without requiring extremely precise positioning to maintain a convincing tonal balance.

The MD 21 is consequently an exceptionally forgiving microphone to work with.

Although historically associated with speech, interviews and reporting, its qualities are by no means restricted to broadcasting. The combination of a dynamic transducer and omnidirectional pickup pattern can make the MD 21 an interesting recording microphone for acoustic instruments, amplifiers, percussion and room applications.

BUILT FOR BROADCASTING

The MD 21 was designed for an environment very different from the controlled conditions of a recording studio.

A reporter's microphone could spend its life being carried through streets, vehicles, studios and public events. It might be passed repeatedly between people, exposed to weather, knocked against equipment and used every day for years.

Reliability was therefore fundamental to the design.

The MD 21's heavy metal construction, protected capsule and omnidirectional response made it particularly well suited to exactly this kind of work.

Its distinctive rectangular silhouette consequently became closely associated with European radio and television reporting.

A LONG-LIVED CLASSIC

What makes the MD 21 particularly remarkable today is not simply its age, but the longevity of the fundamental design.

While broadcasting technology changed dramatically around it, the basic idea behind the MD 21 remained useful: a compact, extremely robust dynamic microphone capable of delivering consistent results without demanding perfect positioning from the operator.

Early surviving examples such as this one also reveal that the MD 21 was not a completely static product. Grille construction, finishes, markings and other physical details changed during its long production history.

That makes an early MD 21 interesting on two levels: as a fully usable professional microphone and as an artifact from the formative years of Sennheiser's microphone production.

SOUND CHARACTER

Natural · Direct · Balanced · Articulate

The MD 21 combines the immediacy and durability of a classic dynamic microphone with the open, consistent behaviour of an omnidirectional design.

More than seventy years after the MD 21 first appeared, its fundamental concept still makes sense — which is perhaps the best explanation for why the design became such an enduring part of broadcasting history.
