FAIRMAN TMC – Tube Master Compressor
For sale is my Fairman TMC, one of the most distinctive and hard-to-find stereo tube compressors in the world of high-end mastering hardware.
It is a fully tube-based design with a truly unusual construction: 16 tubes and 8 transformers, built around a 4x4 architecture, with four tubes working per channel in each of the main sections of the circuit.
This is not simply a compressor with tubes added to the audio path. The TMC was designed around them, with tube stages and transformers forming an integral part of the circuit. It is a large, heavy machine, built according to a design philosophy that is rarely seen today.
Sonically, it has exactly the qualities for which the TMC is known: it can compress in an extremely smooth and unobtrusive way while retaining depth and dimension, but it can also be used very effectively as a tone and coloration tool. It adds density, body and a characteristic three-dimensional quality without necessarily making the mix sound dark or slow.
On the mix bus and in mastering, it is particularly effective with small amounts of gain reduction, bringing a mix together without making the compression itself obvious. It is also excellent on vocals, bass, drums and other sources where size, density and character are desired.
The controls are independent for each channel, allowing precise adjustment of the compression characteristics and making it suitable both for stereo operation and for applications where the two channels need to be treated independently.
Based on its serial number and internal configuration, this unit belongs to the final production revision of the original TMC, sometimes informally referred to as the last revision or “MK3”. It is therefore one of the later TMC units manufactured by Fairman before production of the model ended.
These units are becoming increasingly difficult to find on the used market and come from an era of Fairman production characterized by an exceptionally hands-on, artisanal approach to construction.
A very special machine, both in terms of circuit design and sound, and quite unlike almost any modern compressor.
