The Danelectro ’56 U-2 Reissue is part of the first Korean reissue series, with which Danelectro revived its distinctive American classics starting in 1998. This particular guitar was produced between 1998 and 2003 and features the Cream/Maltshop Cream finish typical of that era.

Like its 1956 predecessor, the U-2 does not have a conventional solid-wood body. A lightweight wooden frame is covered with Masonite on the front and back. This deliberately simple construction was already part of the original’s design and contributes significantly to the guitar’s open, resonant tone and light weight.

The bolt-on maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, 21 frets, and a 25-inch scale length provides a familiar, uncomplicated playing feel. Particularly distinctive are the two Lipstick single-coil pickups in chrome-plated metal sleeves. They deliver the unmistakable Danelectro sound: clear and wiry, with a hollow midrange character, fast attack, and a slightly rough edge at the bridge. Played clean, the U-2 is ideal for surf, country, indie, and Americana; with overdrive, it produces a biting, lo-fi-style tone that stands out distinctly from Strat, Tele, or classic humbucker sounds.

The three-way switch allows you to select either pickup individually or both together. Two concentric dual-knob controls provide separate volume and tone adjustments for each pickup—an authentic yet unusually flexible feature of the early U-2 model.
