E-MU Emax II Rack high-grade PSU

High-grade power supply for E-mu Systems Emax I & II - rack or keyboard versions.

I used to rely on commonly available PSUs, just like the others on the market, but I wasn’t satisfied with the results because of noticeable ripple and background hiss. So I decided to design my own PSU, drawing on my experience servicing sensitive analog devices. Emax series (just like Emulator II/III) tend to have dying SMPS. Out of 7 units I got to work on, 5 had dead PSUs. It calls for a new design :)

Topology :

This PSU uses two Class-B EMI & EN61000-3-2 Class A SMPS units, designed to minimize mains pollution by design. It also features a ground/earth decoupling stage (to break background hum) as well as a simple differential-mode AC filter. The audio rails are conditioned through massive pi-filters, before being fed into a second stage of linear regulators. Rails are further filtered in both differential (capacitive) and common (inductive) modes before being plugged to the Emax board. The entire PCB incorporates a dedicated ground plane to track radiated EMI. The capacitors are rated for 5,000+ hours of operation, while the SMPS themselves are specified for 100,000+ hours of life. Average stabilized temperature after 8 hours under load is 50°C for the Emax I, and 45°C for the Emax II.

Informations :
