Tokai TLC-60 Love Rock Custom 1984 Wine Red | Tokai ’57 PAF Model | Made in Japan

I am offering a Japanese Tokai TLC-60 Love Rock Custom manufactured in 1984. Serial number 4016269 is consistent with Tokai’s numbering system from this period, while the original “60” sticker on the back of the headstock confirms the model designation.

The TLC-60 belonged to the Love Rock series and was described in the Tokai catalogue as the “1957 Refine Model”. It is a classic Japanese interpretation of an all-mahogany late-1950s Custom-style guitar, produced during one of the most highly regarded periods in Tokai’s history.

The guitar features a mahogany body with a mahogany top, without a maple cap. The mahogany neck is set into the body, while the rosewood fingerboard has 22 frets, rectangular block inlays and binding.

The body, neck and headstock are finished in a deep Wine Red colour. Multi-ply body binding, together with binding around the neck and headstock, completes the traditional Custom-style appearance. The front of the headstock features the characteristic split-diamond pearl inlay and Tokai logo.

The guitar is equipped with two original Tokai ’57 PAF Model humbuckers with gold covers. These pickups were designed as Tokai’s interpretation of classic late-1950s humbuckers.

The neck pickup provides a full, warm and singing tone, while the bridge pickup delivers more attack, definition and pronounced midrange. The guitar responds well to playing dynamics and performs equally well with clean sounds and classic rock overdrive.

The traditional control layout consists of:

The guitar features a Tune-o-matic-style bridge, separate stopbar tailpiece and vintage-style tuners with cream buttons. The hardware was originally gold-plated and now shows natural ageing and wear to the finish.

Technical and Cosmetic Condition

The guitar is in Very Good vintage condition, appropriate for its age.

The finish shows normal signs of use, including light surface scratches and a few minor marks on the body. A small finish chip is visible along the rear edge, as shown in the photographs.

The gold plating on the pickup covers, bridge, tailpiece and other hardware shows natural patina and areas of wear. This is typical of more than forty-year-old gold hardware and suits the vintage character of the instrument.

The binding is complete and has naturally yellowed with age. The headstock, neck and neck joint show no visible structural damage.

The guitar is fully functional. The electronics and pickup selector operate correctly, and the instrument is ready to play.
