Martin 5-18 1958 (PRE-OWNED)

Built on a miniature scale yet rich in character, the Martin 5-18 occupies a unique place in the company’s history. Though the model was produced for decades, demand surged in the 1950s as folk musicians embraced its compact size and distinctive voice, with production averaging roughly 150 instruments annually during that period. With an 11-1/4" lower bout, 12-fret neck, and short 21.3" scale, the 5-18 is exceptionally comfortable in the hands and well suited for travel or smaller players.

The Size 5 is also known as a Terz guitar, traditionally tuned a minor third above concert pitch using standard gauge strings, placing the low string at G. This 1958 example is currently set up in that tuning, though it can be converted to standard pitch with a simple restring and minor setup work.

Construction consists of a Sitka spruce top with mahogany back and sides, paired with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge, all finished in classic Style 18 trim. This guitar has seen thoughtful maintenance over the years, including a neck reset and repair to a pickguard crack, several small back cracks, and a side crack near the neck heel. The tuners have been upgraded to Waverly machines, while the bridge pins and saddle are replacements; the original nut remains intact. The original frets have been dressed and play smoothly. Cosmetic wear in the form of dings, dents, and surface scratches is present throughout, consistent with age, and the finish remains entirely original.

Neck measurements include a 1-5/8" nut width, a rounded V profile with a first-fret depth of .881", and 2-1/8" string spacing at the saddle.

Includes a modern Martin Size 5 hard case.
