The SP-404SX became a favorite among beatmakers, live performers, and experimental musicians thanks to its immediate workflow, portability, resampling capabilities, performance effects, and ability to turn captured sounds into something entirely new without getting buried in menus.

This SP-404SX has seen some use—or, as we prefer to call it, experience. It shows visible cosmetic wear from its previous adventures, so please review the photos closely for the exact cosmetic condition.

If anything, the wear is a testament to why these machines earned a reputation for being built like a tank.

Sampling in a war zone is encouraged.

The volume knob is intact and fully functional; only the thin, flat top lid of the knob cap is missing. The knob remains easy to grip and turn normally.

The battery compartment is clean and free of corrosion.

Pad Response Note: All 12 pads have been tested and respond, although some require a firmer press than others.

• Pads 2, 4, 8, 11, and 12 respond with a light touch/press.
• The remaining pads—1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10—require a firmer, more deliberate press.
• For Pads 5, 9, and 10, we found that pressing a particular area of the pad gives the most reliable response:
• Pad 5: Press around the middle
• Pad 9: Press on the bottom half
• Pad 10: Press around the middle to upper portion

So, to be completely clear: all 12 pads respond, but the pad sensitivity is not uniform, and several require more pressure than others as described above.

This SP-404SX has some battle scars and a few quirks, but it remains ready to sample, chop, resample, mangle, and make some noise.
