The SoftStep 2 is a genuinely different kind of MIDI foot controller. Where most floor units give you simple on/off switches, the SoftStep 2 puts ten Smart Fabric gesture-sensitive pads under your feet — each one reading pressure, X/Y position, and directional movement in real time. That means a single pad can be programmed to do six different things depending on how you interact with it: tap to toggle, press and hold to sustain, rock left to right to sweep a parameter. Up to six Note, CC, Pitch Bend, Program Change, MMC, or OSC messages per key, all configurable through KMI's editor software. The carbon fiber backing and elastomeric construction have been tested to survive spills, falls, and being run over — it's genuinely road-proof in a package that weighs 1.3 pounds and fits in a backpack. USB bus-powered and class-compliant for plug-and-play use with any major DAW or software rig. For 5-pin DIN MIDI hardware control without a computer, the optional KMI MIDI Expander adds that capability separately. A one-character alphanumeric display, ten dual-color LEDs, and EL underglow keep you oriented on a dark stage.
