Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a nice early 1950's Shure 55S model microphone that comes with the lower original A83B on / off adapter, longer cable in which to operate and older metal case in which to store.
I should note right away that this mic works on all impedance settings and sounds as good as the day it was sold. The mic has a 100% signal and just the right amount of bass with a smooth, warm tone that will be ideal for singing and broadcasting purposes as it was designed. These older mics do have a slightly brighter tone to them and isn't bass heavy like some of the newer mics of today.
Pic # 2 shows this very model in an old Shure catalog I have and it's basic characteristics.
Pic # 3 shows a younger Elvis using one of these while performing live in concert.
Pic # 4 shows the old on / off adapters that Shure sold back in the 1940's and 1950's for all of their pre 1960's era mics.
This mic comes with it's original cardioid dynamic element and like all 55S series mics the element was loose inside from wore out old shock mounts so I replaced them. The element is secured as it should be and won't give you any unwanted feedback while live. This is very important to do but don't do it yourself as the mics element is sensitive to static shock and you can easily ruin the mic. I have come across many of these mics that have been ruined by those attempting to do just that. Leave it to an expert to do this.
This 55S was the smaller replacement 2nd gen 55. The original 55 was 3 times larger and by 1950 Shure Brothers was looking for a redesign. The 55S was the smaller slender version and it's just as unique and beautiful as the 1st gen 55. Possibly the most sought after mic in the world.
As you can see the satin chrome body shows just typical lite wear. Zero deep scratches or dents but there is a few lite scuff marks and some small pitting in the satin chrome finish. The ribs are completely straight as well. No dents and the inner red silk screens look pretty nice as well with zero odors rips or holes. The Shure label is perfect as welI and I would rate this microphone a solid 8 + out of 1 - 10. Not perfect but far nicer than what you typically come across. This mic is a gem.
You'll see that the original Shure A83B adapter is mounted to the bottom of the mic. It's just as nice as the mic and gave the user the ability to have the on / off switch which the mic didn't have so the adapter was very practical.
The A83B is an all metal construction with the satin chrome finish. It's held in place via two bottom screws so it's easy to detach if you don't want it on the mic. The on / off switch works perfectly. No issues. It even still ahs the original Shure decal on the rear. These usually are missing from years of use. The A83B will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have and it accepts the cable just as the mic would.
Often these old 55 mics are stained with tobacco as smoking was quite popular back in the day. You won't find any of that on this mic. The joint mechanism works perfectly with plenty of tension and a wide degree of tilt. The threading for both the stand and cable are perfect.
You'll notice that there is an original cable that's included. It's appx 28 feet in length giving you a ton of room to work with in the studio or on stage. Soft, pliable and free of damage. It has the standard male Switchcraft XLR end connector and the cable is balanced. You have everything you need. Simply plug in and play.
The Vintage case is also part of this package deal. A durable metal double decker case with foam inner padding pieces to keep everything safe and snug. the top section is for the mic while the bottom is for the cable so that nothing damages each other. A Great place to keep the mic while not in actual mic as it keeps dust, dirt and scratches away. This case shows no wear and has a beautiful painted mustard yellow exterior with a practical handle for carrying it around. The case is appx 14 inches across X 7 inches deep X 5 inches tall. It has two nice locking mechanisms to keep the lid securely closed. There is more than enough room for all the contents provided. Case is an easy 9 + on a scale of 1 - 10.
This is going to be a very special gift for anybody in the singing or broadcasting industry and this is currently the only early 55S I have for sale that functions like new.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
If you need an older desk stand I have several for sale that will work great with this mic.
