Steve’s notes: Here's a stunning set of refurbished 60's Gretsch drums - 14x18" bass drum, 8x12" tom, 14x14" floor tom, and matching 5.5x14" snare drum 'Bop' outfit! These have been professionally recovered by Lee Ruff in Tangerine Glass wrap, which Lee specialty ordered decades ago from the original manufacturer, and is exactly true to the original wrap. I have known Lee personally for over 20 years and he is one of the most knowledgeable Gretsch experts alive today, and his dedication to the Gretsch brand is legendary. Wrap is cut flush with the original bearing edge. Interiors and bearing edges are in excellent shape and let these drums sing as they originally would - you could easily pay way more for an "all original" wrap bop outfit, only to have chewed up bearing edges and interiors with claw marks up the sides; not so with this set! These have a fresh lease on life and will take decades of regular travel to age to that level. And, if you didn’t know these had been rewrapped you’d never tell. A kit from this era, in these sizes, in original tangerine glass, in this condition, would cost you easily $12k-$14k. My advice: Grab this set now. You won’t be sorry. This is THE jazz drum sound everyone covets.
- Chrome on this set is in very nicely polished condition with some sparse, light cosmetic wear/rub that is typical of vintage chrome. No flaking or pitting anywhere - just two unoriginal pieces to note; the batter side 12" 5-hole di-cast hoop is new, and the cradle for the rail consolette's banana is one of our Maxwell repro rail cradles. Currently, the original rail and Gretsch assembly is installed in this cradle. It does not seat perfectly, but is a solid hold! We'll include a repro rail piece by itself with this set just in case you'd like to swap them out.
- Internal tone controls are all original, present and smoothly functional.
- Heads are Remo Ambassador coated over clears with coated on both sides of the bass drum; a new Gretsch logo head on its resonant side. The snare's coated Ambassador is a bit older and nicely settled in; we'll change it at no extra cost if requested. Modern heads are a fairly tight fit, which is normal for this era for Gretsch, but will seat and don't seem to be choked or restrained - once they're seated, you can back off to get these in a lower register even with modern heads. Of course, "Classic Fit"s and the like will seat with zero resistance.
