For your consideration is a 2006 Gibson Custom Shop ES-335 Roy Orbison Signature Model. This is the first run of 70 guitars with the stamp on the back of the headstock. This one is extra cool because the Roy Orbison “stamp” on the back of the headstock reads 39 cents (the cost of a postage stamp when these were built in the year 2006), and this example is serial number RO 039. Therefore, it’s the only one that matches the stamp!

Note: the Roy Orbison ES-335 guitars with the Serial Numbers “RO 0##” and the stamp are the ones from the first run of 70 guitars. Guitars in the second run have a Serial Number “ROY ###” and do not have the stamp.

This guitar is in excellent condition, as it has barely been played. I am the second owner. I don’t believe the first owner played it at all, as the plastic was still on the pickguard when I bought it. I have played it very sparingly in the 5 years I’ve owned it. I have changed the strings once a year so I could bore oil the fretboard to keep it hydrated. The one thing preventing me from calling it “near mint” is that I did have strap locks installed on the guitar for one year. I put the original strap buttons back in after that.

If you’re a collector, you’ll surely be quite happy. If you’re a player, one quick note on the neck—this is a “Small C” profile. It is more of a slim taper, with a bit of a flat back. See the photo of the StewMac device for an impression of the neck.

Please see all the pictures and feel free to ask questions. I've included screenshots of the original description from Gibson.

Here are some specs:

  • Weight: 8.33 lbs (8 lbs, 5.2 oz)
  • Finish: Hi-Gloss 90 Sheen Lacquer
  • Pickups: ‘57 Classics
  • Frets: 1.23mm high at the 1st fret; 2.25mm width.
  • Neck Profile: “Small C” shape, with some flatness to the back.
  • Neck thickness: 0.86 to 0.91 (1st to 12th)

I am willing to entertain serious offers on this guitar. I love Roy, and I know it would be hard for me to find one in this condition again, so I’m not in a rush to sell. However, I do have another 335 and a 355 that I play regularly, so if I could move this one and turn those funds into something else that I’d play more, I’d do it.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for looking.
