Sansui 9090 Stereo Receiver — Professionally Evaluated, LED Upgraded, Fully Operational
The Sansui 9090 is one of the most celebrated receivers of the 1970s golden era of Japanese hi-fi — a powerhouse that continues to command deep respect among audiophiles and collectors. Delivering the unmistakable warmth and authority that define classic Sansui sound, this is a piece that performs as beautifully as it looks.
This example has been professionally evaluated with all functions tested and confirmed working, all controls operating correctly and noiselessly. Panel illumination has been upgraded to LEDs throughout for reduced heat generation and significantly greater longevity — a practical improvement that extends the life of the unit while preserving its signature blue and amber glow.
The unit presents very well under close natural light examination. The real walnut veneer case shows minor surface scratches consistent with age and use, fully documented in the photos. The faceplate, controls, and meters are clean and correct. All knobs, switches, and tone controls — including the distinctive triple tone control system (Bass, Midrange, and Treble, each with defeatable turnover points) — operate as designed.
Key Features
Triple tone controls with defeatable Bass and Treble — uncommon in receivers of the period. Speaker terminals for three separate speaker systems. Pre-out/main-in connectivity for external processing. Dual headphone jacks. Microphone input and level control. Dolby NR/4-channel adaptor connection. MPX noise canceller. Two tape loops. Moving magnet phono stage.
Specifications
Power output: 110 watts per channel into 8Ω, both channels driven. Frequency response: 10Hz to 30kHz. Total harmonic distortion: 0.2% at rated output (independently measured results have exceeded rated spec considerably). Damping factor: 10. Input sensitivity: 2.5mV (MM phono), 100mV (line). Signal to noise ratio: 70dB (MM), 80dB (line). Channel separation: 50dB. Dimensions: 540 x 182 x 397mm. Weight: approximately 52 lbs.
An important note on variants: This is the 9090, not the 9090DB. The non-DB version is widely regarded as the superior choice — it lacks the 9090DB's Dolby board, which is obsolete and a known source of reliability issues, while retaining everything that makes this receiver exceptional.
