The BBE 862 is a two-channel, rack-mounted Sonic Maximizer designed to restore clarity, punch, and sparkle to audio signals. Released in the 1990s, it is widely used in live sound, recording studios, and instrument rigs. 

• Phase Alignment: Instead of just acting as an equalizer, the 862 utilizes a time-delay circuit to fix phase anomalies inherent in speaker reproduction. It delays low frequencies by 2.5 milliseconds and mid-frequencies by 0.5 milliseconds, allowing the ear to process the high-frequency transients and the low-end punch simultaneously. 
• Process Control: Adjusts the phase and amplitude of the high frequencies, adding "sparkle" and definition to vocals, guitars, and keys. 
• Lo Contour Control: Acts as a specialized EQ for frequencies at 50 Hz and below. It is used to tighten or beef up the low end (commonly used for bass guitars and kick drums). 
• Function Switch: Allows the user to quickly toggle and compare the BBE processed signal to the clean, unprocessed signal. 

How to Use It

• Subtle Application: While great for beefing up a dull track or breathing life into a dark sound system, overusing the knobs can make the tone sound overly bright, artificial, or scooped.
• Versatility: It can be used for individual instruments (like bass or guitar), on a drum bus, or on a full master mix.
