"Louder sound," "thicker sound," and "wider dynamic range"—artists who have used Yamaha drums for many years have sought a sound that combines these three elements in Yamaha drums.

Therefore, Yamaha poured its technology and insights, cultivated through years of research and development and extensive manufacturing experience, into creating the ultimate drum set that embodies these three elements. That was the goal.

As a result, the PHX was born, producing an unprecedentedly wide dynamic range and rich midrange.

• Hybrid Shell

The "hybrid shell structure" was devised to realize the PHX concept of "high volume," "thick sound," and "wide dynamic range."

By placing the heaviest and hardest wood in the center and gradually softening it towards the outside, it creates ideal shell vibration.

Jatoba, the hardest of shell materials, is used as the core material, sandwiched between layers of heavy, hard Kapur wood, and maple is used for the outer layer.

Numerous prototypes were created, and sound checks were conducted with artists to find the ideal shell.

• Bearing Edge

The "bearing edge" is what determines the tone and sound of a drum.

PHX sets the bearing edge angle to 30° for all shell sizes, while varying the degree of roundness of the apex that contacts the head for each tom, floor tom, and bass drum.

As a result, the bass drum has a clearer sound, and the toms have a richer sound.

The edges, handcrafted by artisans who are intimately familiar with the characteristics of each type of wood, are meticulously polished and treated with special surface treatments to achieve the best possible finish.

• Hardware

Parts such as lugs, mounting systems, and hoops play a crucial role in achieving the ideal sound.

The mounting system employs Yamaha's unique Y.E.S.S.II, which does not hinder the vibration of the tom, and has been significantly improved to suit PHX. It stably holds the heavy PHX shell, maximizing the shell's vibration, and the maple plate brings out the mid-low frequency sound.

The hook lugs are designed to minimize the contact area of the lugs so as not to hinder the shell's vibration, suppressing unwanted overtones and highlighting the fundamental tone. Thanks to the combined effects of the Y.E.S.S.II and hook lugs, the PHX achieves a balanced and distinctive tone while maintaining a live sound.

Yamaha's unique 3.0mm thick die-cast aluminum hoops achieve both high rigidity and lightweight construction. The head vibrates to its maximum potential, producing a melodic tone and a moderate attack.

• Parts Color

In addition to chrome parts, gold parts are also available for the hook lugs and die-cast aluminum hoops. This adds a touch of luxury to the drum set.
