Late 50’s Kudelski Nagra III Reel-to-Reel Tape Field Recorder - Broadcast-Grade Swiss Design

Here’s a serious slice of analog engineering for those who appreciate precision and legacy. This is a Nagra III mono reel-to-reel field recorder, built in Switzerland in the late 1950s through the 1960s. Originally designed for high-end film, broadcast, and scientific work, these machines set the standard for location recording for decades. This particular unit shows off that unmistakable industrial design, with that sturdy brushed-aluminum faceplate, heavy-duty rotary switches, and that glorious modulometer proudly front and center. It’s cosmetically super clean throughout, aside from the missing top lid, and shows just the right amount of patina to remind you it's lived a working life.

This unit powers up and appears to run fine on batteries—we haven’t tested it with a power supply, because one isn’t included. That said, the tape transport functions engage properly, and the controls and switches all turn and click with a satisfying precision that says Quality Swiss Engineering. You can feel the care in every interaction; from the modulometer needle’s bounce to the servo-controlled tape speed. Inputs and outputs are in good order, and all major mechanical elements are intact. We’ve left it otherwise untouched so the next owner can decide whether to preserve it as-is or dive into full restoration.

Whether you're a collector of historical broadcast gear, a film sound veteran reconnecting with an old friend, or just a fan of cold war-era electronics with military-grade build quality, this Nagra III belongs in your rig or on your shelf. Sold as-is, no PSU or top cover, but fully deserving of its legendary reputation.
