Gates Level Devil Model M5546 – Tube Broadcast Limiter / Expander

The Gates Level Devil is a rare monophonic all-tube dynamics processor, originally produced between the early 1950s and 1960s. Marketed at the time as a “program gated amplifier,” it was designed for broadcast use but has since earned a place in boutique studio workflows for its unique sonic character and undeniable charm.

This particular unit is in solid condition for its age. The exterior shows some expected cosmetic wear, but nothing that affects functionality or overall appeal. Inside, however, it’s a different story—the internal layout is clean, well-organized, and features clearly labeled and matched tubes, a testament to the care and craftsmanship behind this piece. It’s also been upgraded with cleanly wired modern XLR pigtails, offering a hassle-free, studio-ready setup without the need for modification.

Functionally, the Level Devil can operate as a linear amplifiervolume expander, or limiter. It features a fixed 10ms attack and a release time between 1.5 and 2 seconds. In expander mode, the rise time is 2 seconds with a 4-second recovery. As a straight amplifier, it provides up to 50dB of gain without triggering the limiting or expanding circuits.

Sonically, it delivers a large, open sound with rich harmonic detail courtesy of its tube design. It’s especially well-suited to sources with broad dynamic rangesvocals, acoustic instruments, room mics—adding warmth and presence while still maintaining a smooth, natural feel. Its musical response and vintage coloration make it a go-to for engineers who appreciate gear with real character.

And of course, we have to mention one of the coolest design touches: the little cartoon devil pushing the needle on the VU meter. It’s a small detail, but one that gives this unit a playful, iconic personality—a nod to the golden age of radio and studio innovation.

Previously housed in a high-end Brooklyn studio, this Level Devil is a lovingly preservedready-to-roll piece of broadcast history that deserves a spot in any serious studio or collection.
