The Gibson ES-135 sits in a really interesting place in Gibson’s history. Originally introduced as a more accessible semi-hollow option, it blends elements of traditional hollowbody construction with a centre block-style design that offers greater control at volume. The result is a guitar that feels lively and resonant, yet far more manageable on stage than a fully hollow archtop.
Finished in classic black, this example has aged nicely, showing some light, honest finish wear that suits the model well without detracting from its overall presentation. There are no cracks or repairs, and the guitar remains structurally sound throughout. The laminated maple body and neck provide a clear, articulate voice with plenty of definition, while still retaining the warmth and depth you’d expect from a semi-hollow design.
Tonally, the ES-135 is a versatile instrument. It comfortably covers jazz and blues territory, but also responds beautifully to edge-of-breakup and driven tones. The hollow nature of the body encourages natural feedback, harmonics and overtones, giving the guitar a sense of movement and interaction that feels genuinely alive in a live setting.
The neck has a comfortable, gently rounded C-profile that feels fast and familiar in the hand. Frets are in good condition with plenty of life left, making it an easy guitar to settle into straight away. The pickups deliver a clear, detailed sound with plenty of harmonic richness, remaining articulate whether played clean or pushed harder.
This 2002 example retains all of its original hardware and electronics, including pickups, controls, pickguard and knobs. The original guard shows some minor pick wear, but there is no buckle rash and no fingerboard pitting to note. It comes complete with its original hard shell case in good condition.
A versatile, characterful ES-135 that offers classic Gibson tone, manageable semi-hollow behaviour and a great playing feel.
