The NKT272 "red dot" is a vintage Newmarket Transistors (NKT) PNP germanium transistor famously sought after for use in boutique and vintage-replica guitar fuzz pedals, such as the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face.

Overview & History

• Manufacturer: Newmarket Transistors Ltd (NKT), a British company active in the 1960s.
• Type: PNP germanium transistor.
• The "Red Dot": The colored dot on vintage NKT transistors (which could be red, white, or green) simply indicates the collector leg of the component for easy identification on a circuit board; it does not denote a specific performance tier or secret specification.
• Famous Siblings: While the NKT275 is the most legendary Newmarket transistor used in early 1966–1968 Fuzz Face pedals, other variants like the NKT272, NKT274, and NKT214 were produced around the same era and are utilized by high-end pedal builders (such as Organic Sounds with their Orga Face lines) to replicate authentic vintage germanium tone and dynamic cleanup.

Characteristics in Audio Applications

• Germanium Tone: Unlike modern silicon transistors, germanium components like the NKT272 have a warmer, more organic crunch and are highly sensitive to temperature changes and guitar volume roll-off.
• Collector-Leg Indicator: If you are servicing or building a vintage clone, remember that the red dot marks the collector.
