The Casio SZ-1 Digital Multi-Track MIDI Sequencer is a compact four-track hardware sequencer designed for recording, editing and playing back performances using external MIDI instruments. Featuring real-time and manual step recording, polyphonic track input, 16-channel MIDI assignment, onboard editing, dual MIDI outputs, adjustable tempo and optional cartridge or cassette data storage, the SZ-1 offers a hands-on vintage approach to hardware MIDI sequencing.

  • 4-track digital MIDI sequencer designed for recording and controlling external MIDI keyboards, synthesisers and other MIDI equipment.
  • Real-time and manual/step recording modes; each track can receive polyphonic MIDI input during real-time recording.
  • Memory capacity: up to 1,800 notes/rests in real-time recording or 3,600 notes/rests in manual recording.
  • Records MIDI performance information including note on/off and pitch, program changes, control changes, glide on/off and foot-control data.
  • Manual recording allows notes and rests to be entered individually, including different note values, ties, triplets and dotted notes.
  • 16 selectable MIDI output channels, allowing individual tracks to be assigned to external MIDI instruments.
  • Editing functions: Copy, Insert, Delete and Clear for modifying manually recorded sequences.
  • Adjustable tempo from 40–256 BPM, with built-in metronome, repeat playback and internal/external clock operation.
  • Dedicated transport controls for Record, Play, Stop, Forward, Reverse and Reset.
  • Connections: 1 × MIDI In, 2 × MIDI Out, MT tape-interface terminal, 30-pin cartridge connection, Start/Stop footswitch input and 7.5V DC power input.
  • Sequence data can be saved and loaded using an optional Casio RA-5 RAM cartridge, or transferred to cassette tape through the SZ-1's MT interface.
  • Supports external clock synchronisation, allowing integration with compatible drum machines and other MIDI hardware. The manual also outlines multi-instrument and multi-SZ-1 sequencing configurations.
  • Powered by 5 × SUM-1 batteries or an optional Casio AD-1 AC adaptor; rated power consumption is 3.0 W.
  • Dimensions: 325 × 220 × 62 mm.
  • Weight: approximately 1.7 kg including batteries.
  • The SZ-1 is a MIDI sequencer rather than a sound-generating instrument, so an external MIDI keyboard, synthesiser or sound module is required to produce audio.
