Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.
You are looking at a unique and rarer 1960's Calrad DM-16H.L model dynamic microphone with an all metal body and satin chrome finish that closely resembled the classic Astatic 77A model mic from that era. This mic comes with an original short mic cable in which to operate as well as the original box.
This model is so much rarer because it comes with the built in Hi / Low Z impedance switch that is located right under the front of the mics head and it allowed the user to get the mic in sinc with their audio equipment and it also allows you to adjust the tone of the mic. There were several Japanese mics that were sold in this style but not many with the dual Z switch on the head.
It should be noted right away that the mic has been tested. It works perfectly with very strong output and can be used for recording or general broadcasting purposes as it was designed. It's omni-directional in nature so it's polar pattern tends to pick up a bit more sound than a uni-directional mic. In the High Z setting this would make an ideal harp mic.
Pic # 2 shows a young Rick Astley using one on these mics in a video shoot of the hit song Never Gonna Give You Up.
The mic when set at high impedance and has an old school "rockabilly" sound being clear and bright in nature with virtually no bass as a high impedance mic usually sounds. In the Low Z setting the volume is a bit less but there's a little bass to the tone. Nothing a little gain won't solve but that's how these mics work.
This microphone has a classic mid century, modern design and is quite handsome. Certainly a more aggressive design. The DM-16H.L is about half the size of the Astatic 77A.
This microphone is in gorgeous shape despite it's age being free of any wear. The cable lacked an end connector so I don't think this mic was ever actually used. The black inner cloth pop filter is excellent. No dents on the front grill and the label looks amazing. This mic is an absolute gem.
This mic will screw onto any desk or floor stand you choose to use as no desk stand is provided.
You'll notice that there is a short 6 foot cable included to operate the mic. The cable is free of any wear. It's soft, pliable and works perfectly with the standard male Switchcraft male XLR end connector which again, I installed.
This mic is easily an 9 + on a scale of 1 - 10 cosmetically speaking. It will make a very fine display piece even if you choose not to use it.
The original hard to find box is included and in really nice shape. It still has the original price tag on the exterior which is pretty cool. The original plastic mic sleeve is still inside and covers the mic.
MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE...USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY.
If you need a period stand I have plenty to choose from in my online store.
