Fender Japan Aerodyne Jazz Bass AJB in Candy Apple Red with a matching headstock, made in Japan during the U-serial period, circa 2010–2012.

The Japanese-market Aerodyne has a look and feel all its own. Its smoothly arched body top and slim body profile give it a noticeably sleeker appearance than a traditional Jazz Bass, and the matching Candy Apple Red headstock finishes it off beautifully.

This AJB features a basswood body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard, along with the very useful P/J pickup combination. The split-coil neck pickup gives you the fuller, punchier character associated with a Precision Bass, while the bridge pickup can add the definition and edge of a Jazz Bass. Blending the two makes this a very flexible bass for a wide range of playing styles.

One of my favorite details on these Japanese Aerodynes is how clean the design looks without feeling overly modern. The curved top, body binding and matching headstock give it plenty of character, while the neck and controls still feel immediately familiar if you are used to Fender basses.

A great example of the distinctive instruments Fender Japan was producing during this period, and especially attractive in Candy Apple Red.
